EEE 410: Signals and Systems First Semester Examination

Signals and systems paper set for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, sat on Wednesday the twentieth of March from two until four in the afternoon. Question one is compulsory at thirty marks: the unknown impedance that makes the driving point impedance of a resistor-capacitor network unity and whether it is inductive or capacitive, energy and power signals, the output pulse of a system whose input-output relationship advances the input by one, the properties of the Fourier series, the transfer function derived from a given pole-zero pattern, and short definitions of ergodicity, random process and stationary random process. The optional questions take a complex exponential signal and its uniform sampling, asking for the condition on the sampling interval that makes the resulting discrete-time sequence periodic; the steady state behaviour of a bridge circuit for sinusoidal inputs; a linear time invariant system implemented as an RLC circuit, its differential equation relating input to output, its frequency response found from exponential inputs and its output for a sine input; and the trigonometric form of a periodic signal as a sum of cosines. The figures the questions refer to are drawn with the paper: the two-port network, the rectangular pulse, the pole-zero plot with its marked poles and zeros, the bridge, the parallel tuned circuit and the series-parallel network with its component values.
