Growing Leaders Programme Session 1: Foundations of Leadership and Management

First session of the certificate in leadership development and mentorship, written against the concern of the public and employers over the underperformance of graduates and the lack of leadership capacity in the workplace. Defines leadership and management and holds them apart, sets out the qualities a leader needs including empathy and the emotional intelligence that lets a leader stand in another's place and understand their concerns, distinguishes a good manager from a good leader, and explains the sources of power available to leaders in modern society. Closes on the discussion questions the session is meant to open.
