EMM 217: Principles of Engineering Design First Semester Examination

Design paper that starts from why materials knowledge matters to a design engineer and sizes the support posts of a tensile-testing apparatus from yield strength and a chosen factor of safety. Works the design process end to end on a product of the candidate's own: the questions that define the problem, the levels of analysis applied to candidate solutions, designing for safety, the questions that make up a testing protocol, and the options when a prototype fails that protocol. Distinguishes standards from codes and developmental, adaptive and new design, applies ergonomic principles to a hospital bed, and estimates the factor of safety under the maximum shear stress, distortion energy and maximum normal stress theories. Selects a hull material against stated strength, hardness and cost limits, then treats product liability, design constraints, manufacturability, noise, machine elements, bearing selection, and the difference between a model and a prototype.
