EBM 405: Biomedical Instrumentation I Second Semester Examination
Biomedical instrumentation paper. Distinguishes an actuator from a transducer and a sensor, and sensors from transducers with examples, calculates the accuracy of a voltmeter reading 30 volts against a true 28.7 volts, separates invasive from non-invasive instruments, reviews the types of sensor used in biomedical instrumentation, and shows with a diagram how hysteresis affects the performance of an instrument. Continues with three types of transducer, the capacitance of a circular plate sensor separated by a few microns of dielectric, and the operation of a sensor by diagram. Names the four classes of instrument error with how each arises and the corrective mechanism for it, explains bridge circuits for cardiopulmonary dynamics sensors, the factors considered when designing a biomedical instrument and how its constraints are overcome, and the characteristics of a dynamic system. Closes on LabVIEW with its benefits and its use in medicine alongside the internet, and on why mathematical modelling and simulation of physiological systems matters in the field with the cost-benefit case for it.
