EBM 502: Introduction to Bioinformatics First Semester Examination
First semester paper for the biomedical engineering degree, sat on Tuesday the twenty-eighth of January 2020 from eight to ten, question one compulsory and any two of the others. Question one explains the discipline of bioinformatics and details the fields that contribute to it, describes the relationship between health information systems and biomedical informatics, discusses the relevance of bioinformatics to the study of biomedical engineering, and highlights six features of the Microsoft Visual Basic integrated development environment. The others explain the objectives of artificial intelligence as an approach that makes a computer, a robot or a product think like a human and illustrate the typical organisation of an artificial neural network with a labelled diagram; explain the conditions that must be met for a data acquisition system to be fully deployed in a hospital and the key characteristics of biomedical database management systems; discuss the phases of a hospital information system development lifecycle with the deliverables expected after each and four stakeholders in the analysis and development of biomedical systems; and, using diagrams, explicate the data models applicable to a medical database management system and explain the concept of virtual reality and its applications as an emerging scientific discipline.
