ECU 500: Engineering Practice and Ethics Course Outline

A thirteen-week schedule for the engineering practice and ethics unit: the definition of an engineer and the role of the engineer, then the code of ethics in two sittings covering the fundamental principles of engineering practice, the rules of practice, professional obligations and the role of the engineer in society. Continues into introduction to law with the law of tort, intellectual property laws and contractual obligations, the Kenyan business units from sole proprietorship and partnership through limited liability company, corporation, parastatal and cooperative with the Companies Act, the Engineers Act with the Engineers Board and the professional societies, engineering as a business covering consultancy, the nature and sources of contract, project management and contractual disputes, the engineer as a contractor with the occupational safety and health legislation and conditions of work, and industrial relations with trade unions, collective bargaining, labour laws, arbitration and the industrial court. Two continuous assessment tests, tutorials, revision and the examination are timetabled.
