EMM 205: Fluid Mechanics II First Semester Examination

Opens on the physical meaning of the Reynolds number and why it is critical in fluid flow, then derives the normal force of a horizontal jet on an inclined plate, the force when the plate moves, the work done per second and the efficiency of the arrangement. Works from first principles to an expression for steady laminar flow of a viscous incompressible fluid through a rectangular passage and the shear stress at the wall, and applies it to leakage past a plunger in a cylinder. Continues with the loss of head at a sudden enlargement, the total head driving a discharge through a compound pipe that steps up in diameter, and closes on dynamic similarity, corresponding speed and the wave-making resistance of a ship's hull scaled from a model.
