EMM 301: Mechanics of Machines I First Semester Examination

Mechanisms and machine elements paper. Differentiates a lower pair from a higher pair with examples, illustrates all the inversions of a four bar planar linkage and applies one to the coupled wheels of a locomotive. Separates uniform pressure from uniform wear theory in clutch design and finds the maximum and minimum pressure in a single plate clutch from the contact radii and axial force, then describes belt slip and its effect on velocity ratio and states Kennedy's theorem for three kinematic links. Continues with the velocity ratio of a V-belt drive derived to the terms, the maximum power transmissible by a three-belt drive to a blower with the corresponding pulley diameter, the instantaneous centre method applied to a slider crank for piston velocity and connecting rod angular velocity, the efficiency of a screw and the torque needed to raise a load, and the velocity and acceleration diagrams of a four bar chain.
