EPL 300 and EMM 302: Solid and Structural Mechanics Continuous Assessment Test

Continuous assessment test carried by two unit codes. A rectangular steel block loaded by three mutually perpendicular forces gives the strains along each force, the change in volume and the bulk modulus and modulus of rigidity. A tapered tension specimen between gauge marks yields the modulus of elasticity from the measured extension, compared in strain energy with a uniform specimen of the same material carrying the same load. Closes on the force in every member of a truss by the method of joints, and on a compressed-air tank formed by welding two steel hemispheres, where the permissible internal pressure is limited in turn by allowable tensile stress, allowable shear stress, a cap on surface strain and the tensile load the welded seam can carry under its factor of safety.
